ADU Design & Historic Home Remodel in Bend, Oregon
Historic Home Renovation & ADU Design
Project Overview
The Albany Remodel & ADU transformed a deteriorating downtown Bend property into a thoughtfully redesigned two-dwelling residence.
Radius Design reimagined the existing home's layout, added a private Accessory Dwelling Unit, and coordinated the complex permitting and engineering process required to bring the project to life.
The result is a modern, highly functional property that preserves the charm of Bend's historic neighborhoods while providing flexible living options for future generations. If you're interested in another Historic Bend remodel check out this Historic Farmhouse Renovation.

Design Response
Radius Design completely reimagined the home's interior layout, creating a spacious primary suite, improving circulation throughout the home, and maximizing storage and functionality.
- The detached guest quarters and garage were transformed into a contemporary ADU with its own private entrance and patio
- Careful site planning ensured the main residence retained a private backyard while the ADU enjoyed an independent outdoor living area
- The result is a property that feels cohesive, modern, and highly livable while respecting the architectural character of the surrounding neighborhood

Solutions Addressed
- Re-engineered the footprint to create a new primary suite with a walk-in closet and oversized, custom-tiled shower
- Improved flow and circulation using space-saving pocket doors and custom utility storage
- Added a Craftsman-inspired front porch with classic columns to enhance historic curb appeal
- Converted the existing garage/guest quarters into a legal, 530-square-foot single-level ADU
- Positioned the ADU entrance on Commerce Street to provide an independent patio while preserving the main home's private backyard
- Successfully navigated City of Bend Type 1 Plan Review and coordinated complex structural engineering for the new additions
RESULT
The result is a perfect synergy of historic bungalow essence and contemporary luxury.
- The renovation breathed new life into this deteriorating downtown property, rescuing it from aging infrastructure and foundation concerns to become a stunning showcase of craftsmanship
- The completed project features a cohesive, highly livable 1,939-square-foot primary residence and a seamlessly integrated 530-square-foot ADU
- By providing independent outdoor living areas and thoughtful interior circulation, the property now offers flexible living options and absolute privacy for both dwellings while beautifully preserving the architectural character of the surrounding Bend neighborhood
