The Walker Barndominium was designed as a rural shop-house that prioritizes functionality, flexibility, and long-term constructability. The project balances a large-scale workshop environment with a compact residential component, creating a practical live-work structure suited for evolving needs.
Rather than over-defining the program, the layout allows the building to adapt over time. The shop serves as the primary volume, while the attached living space provides efficient, comfortable day-to-day use. The result is a straightforward, durable structure designed for real-world conditions and phased construction.

The Challenge

Design Response
The plan was organized around a shop-forward layout, with a large open garage forming the core of the building. Structural bays and circulation paths were designed to remain flexible, allowing portions of the building to be completed or adapted over time without disrupting the overall structure.
The attached 960 sq ft living space is intentionally efficient, with an open-concept layout that integrates kitchen, dining, and living areas. A single bedroom and supporting spaces provide functionality without overbuilding.
A loft above introduces additional flexibility, allowing the structure to evolve as needs change—whether for storage, workspace, or expanded living.
The design emphasizes clarity, repeatable structural systems, and durable materials to ensure the building remains practical and buildable across an extended timeline.
